Elliott Potter, illustrator of By Surf and By Stream, worked as a draftsman at
Carthage Marble Corp., Carthage, Missouri, while in high school. He studied architecture at the
University of Illinois, Champaign\Urbana for two and a half years before changing his major to Industrial

Administration, in which he received his B.S. degree, using Architecture as his minor. He designed and made renderings of buildings during his study of architecture and took a watercolor course, which was the beginning of his lifelong interest in art. Watercolor has been his favorite medium ever since and he has studied under nationally known Edgar Whitney and Dr. Scorse of Joplin, Mo.

Many outstanding painters and artists live in the region of Carthage and the Ozarks. One year Elliott Potter won the first place purchase award in the annual

competition of the Carthage Art Association. His watercolors have been hung in shows at the Spiva Art Center in Joplin and recently at artCentral in Carthage, where he has been invited to give a one-man show. His work before retirement made good use of his training in architecture, business and art. When an ideal country lot was finally located and purchased, he designed the country home he shares with the author on a high bluff overlooking a creek and a nearby lake.

He started doing pen-and-ink drawings many years ago as he and the author began developing the book that eventually became By Surf and By Stream, Illustrated Poems, Stories and Reflections and worked with her on the design and layout of the book. From 2000 through 2006, he did more and more pen-and-ink drawings as the Spring River Saga stories were added and the book was expanded to two hundred pages. Several of his pen-and-ink drawings are available as matted prints.
